Can you remember the last difficult conversation you had? If you had another chance, would you do it differently?
Conflict Theatre@UBC uses the situation and tools of theatre to explore and constructively engage with workplace conflict at UBC. Through arts-based, experiential education tailored to the UBC context, we offer a new way to look at old patterns and build the courage to approach workplace conflict differently. Participants – either as individuals or as a team – have the opportunity to reflect on their approach and practice difficult conversations in the workplace.
Conflict Theatre uses the tradition of forum theatre as the basis of our work. In forum theatre, a play is created and performed by community members, not professional actors, and presented back to the community. The audience is then welcomed to intervene in the scenes to explore how the story might play out differently. Through this interactive process, forum theatre provides a unique opportunity to rehearse courage and apply new strategies to real problems.
We also use a series of embodied activities and systems games to help people reflect on personal challenges, interpersonal dynamics, and systemic structures. Check out the video below to learn more about the experience from participants in our 2017 Rehearsing Conflict summer intensive.
Conflict Theatre is a collaboration between UBC’s Human Resources and the Department of Theatre and Film. Find out more on the About Us page.
