First Week

Now that the basics are covered...
Let’s get you started! In your first week, it helps to go over the following areas to set yourself up for success - in your work, with your team, and in your role.

You & Your Role

As you begin your career at UBC, we understand that being successful here is important to you, and it’s important to us too. Take some time in your first week to talk to your supervisor/manager to get yourself started on the right track.

Here are some resources to help you get started:

You & Your Team

UBC can seem like a big organization, but at our core, we are a group of people dedicated to making a difference. Start your new role off right by getting to know your team, and over time, your network will grow.

Take the initiative

Introduce yourself to others. A quick five-minute chat with your new colleagues goes a long way in establishing a great working relationship.

Join your colleagues for lunch

Bonding over a meal is a great way to get to know new people. Sit down with your colleagues for lunch, and learn about your new team, environment and culture.

Connect with your supervisor

Your supervisor is a great resource for you in a new job. If you have any questions, make sure to ask them so you can succeed in your role.

You & UBC

For many new staff and faculty starting in their roles, UBC is bigger than their previous workplace - not just in the size of the organization, but also in the size and complexity of our campuses and our departments. To orient yourself around UBC, it helps to review the following:
