UBC Human Resources administers professional development funds for several employee groups at UBC.

Research Associates: Current PD Funding Cycle Ends March 31

Research Associates at UBC are eligible to apply for funding to support your ongoing professional development.

You can apply for up to $2,000 in reimbursements to cover a wide variety of PD-related expenses during the two-year funding cycle that runs April 1, 2016 – March 31, 2018. To take advantage of funds currently available to you, your completed PD claim form must be submitted to UBC Human Resources no later than Friday, March 23, 2018.

Apply soon to claim your Staff Professional Development Funds for 2017/18

The Staff Professional Development Funds at UBC are annual funding pools designed to support employees with staff appointments to pursue learning opportunities that will enhance their professional knowledge, work performance, and ongoing career growth at UBC.

Apply soon to access PD funds available for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. Staff are welcome to make claims on a first-come, first-served basis until the budgeted funding pool is exhausted or by the end of the fiscal year, whichever comes sooner. The amount you can claim depends on your employee group, as each group has its own funding pool subject to an annual budget allocation and program guidelines.

Based on claim patterns this year, it is anticipated that the budgeted PD funds will accommodate staff requests up until the March 31 fiscal year-end, with the exception of the M&P PD Fund for AAPS members.

New Professional Development Fund for Service Unit Directors and Excluded M&P Staff

We are pleased to share that UBC has established a new Professional Development Fund for Service Unit Directors and Excluded Management and Professional staff (excluded from AAPS) effective April 1, 2017.

This new financial resource is intended to complement staff development initiatives already in place within units or departments and will provide more opportunity for Service Unit Directors and Excluded M&P staff to identify their professional development needs, increase skills, and actively navigate their careers at UBC.

New Year for Staff PD Funds:  April 1, 2017- March 31, 2018

As of April 1, 2017,  professional development funds for the following employee groups became available for the 2017-2018 fund year. The maximum yearly claim amount for some employee group funds have been adjusted for the current fund year. Please review your applicable fund guidelines prior to claim submission.

  • M&P (AAPS): $550
  • CUPE 2950 – JSTP: $1,400
  • Executive Administrative: $1,500
  • CUPE 116: $1,000
  • Non-Union TRA: $1,000
  • BCGEU Okanagan: $1,200 Regular; $600 Auxiliary

Tuition Waivers

The UBC Tuition Fee Waiver provides eligible UBC staff and faculty with tuition assistance for approved UBC undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as non-credit courses offered through UBC Extended Education and approved Sauder School of Business Continuing Business Studies non-credit courses and certificate programs .
