Faculty / Staff Housing Support Programs

The UBC Housing Action Plan was approved in September 2012 to improve choice and affordability of housing on the Vancouver campus for faculty, staff and students. Its policies include:

  • increasing the range of format of housing offered on-campus
  • increasing the amount of restricted Faculty and Staff rental housing on campus
  • finding ways to support homeownership opportunities for faculty

UBC’s faculty and staff rental programs and ownership loan programs are each different components within this overall strategy.

Rental On-Campus Restricted to Faculty & Staff (Below Market Rents)

UBC has approximately 500 rental housing units in 10 buildings designated for faculty and staff in the campus residential neighbourhoods known as Hawthorne Place, Wesbrook Place, and East Campus.

These units are all relatively new (between 1 and 15 years old) with the advantage of being within an easy and beautiful walk or bike ride of the main academic campus, parks, schools, community centre and daycares. They are also available to faculty and staff at lower rents than what an equivalent unit would cost in the regular marketplace. These rental units are operated for the university by Village Gate Homes, a subsidiary of UBC Properties Trust. Rent-Geared-to-Income Program Pilot:

Employees may also be eligible for additional rental rate assistance through this program.  Participants would live in regular Village Gate Homes faculty staff rental units, but rent would be capped at 30% of household income.  See below for more details on eligibility and application procedures.

The Faculty Home Ownership Program (FHOP) contains loan options designed to help make home ownership more affordable for approved full-time faculty whose recruitment and retention is determined to be of critical strategic importance to the university.

Advance Faculty-Staff Purchase Window for New Market Housing

New market project developers on-campus are encouraged to provide an advance-access purchase window for UBC Faculty and Staff. These limited open-houses or other incentives unique to UBC faculty and staff are offered from time to time by developers as their new projects come on-stream and are supplementary to and are separate from the UBC Faculty Home Ownership Program (FHOP).

Faculty and staff who wish to be contacted by developers for these advance purchase windows may register their names with developers directly, or may stay alert to ongoing event announcements by regularly visiting the Wesbrook Village website. Alternatively faculty and staff who wish to receive notification of these advance purchase windows should email UBC Housing & Relocation Services to request their names be added to the notification list.
