Chair Height

The height of your chair is the foundation of your posture. Your feet need to be firmly supported either on the floor or on a footrest. Scroll down for examples of correct and incorrect seated posture.

Ideal Chair Height

Ideal Chair Height:

  • Feet firmly supported
  • Knees ~900
  • Thighs approximately parallel to the floor; it is okay for the hips to be slightly above the knees

Seat Too High

The rotating picture above illustrates the differences with the chair at the correct height as compared to one that is too high.

Risks:

  • Discomfort under thighs (chair digging in to calves)
  • Back unsupported: if you can’t reach the ground you’ll be tempted to sit at the edge of your chair
  • Reduced circulation, possibly swollen ankles, which could be caused by the pressure from the seat pan digging into thighs or by supporting feet on chair prongs which results in a tight knee angle

Fix It:

  • Lower Chair, or
  • Obtain footrest/box

Note: if lowering your chair results in your keyboard sitting too high, you will need to keep your chair raised and use a footrest or lower your chair and obtain a keyboard tray.


Seat Too Low

Risks:

  • Slouching: Knees above hips promotes rounding of spine which increases pressure on the discs
  • Knees above hips results in increased pressure on buttocks

How to Fix:

  • Raise chair

How to Adjust:
