Breastfeeding Friendly Spaces at UBC

breastfeeding friendly spaces logoThere are many places on campus where you can find a quiet space to breastfeed your child. Some of these spaces are also suitable for anyone seeking to tend to a child’s needs or to pump milk. This page outlines some designated breastfeeding-friendly spaces at UBC’s Vancouver campus that offer:

  • a quiet, clean and sanitary space identified by common signage,
  • comfortable seating, electrical outlets and change table in room or a nearby washroom.

The degree of privacy in designated spaces varies from private to semi-private. Signage outside of these spaces clearly indicates if the space is private or semi-private.

Private spaces

Private breastfeeding-friendly spaces are clean, sanitary and quiet single-user rooms, with a chair, outlet and garbage can available. While the rooms provide a high degree of privacy, they can be a multipurpose room, such as an infrequently used meeting room. There is often a change table installed in these spaces or in a nearby washroom.

Semi-private spaces

Semi-private breastfeeding-friendly spaces are clean, sanitary and quiet rooms. While the rooms provide a reasonable degree of privacy, they are not explicitly single-user spaces and may often be shared by others. Some of the semi-private spaces are restricted to women only due to the nature of the space (e.g. a women’s-only lounge or access through a women’s washroom).
