CUPE 2278 (English Language Instructors): Benefit Eligibility, Start Dates and Costs

The benefits you are eligible for as a member of the CUPE 2278 employee group depend on:

  • whether your appointment is full time or part time,
  • the length of your appointment,
  • whether your appointment is continuing, and
  • your age at your date of hire.

Before you enrol in your benefits package, please review the table below to familiarize yourself with:

  • the benefits you are eligible for,
  • whether these benefits are mandatory or optional,
  • the date that each benefit will become effective, and
  • the monthly cost of each benefit.

Once you have decided which of the optional benefits you want to sign up for, please complete the UBC Benefits Sign-On Session to enrol for benefits and sign up for payroll. You will need the enrolment code listed at the bottom of this page to complete this session. Your Benefits Enrolment Code is also included on your Letter of Offer.

Full-time continuing appointments

If you have a full-time continuing appointment for 12 months or more, you are eligible for all of the benefits outlined in the table below.

Extended Health Plan Optional Under 71 First day of the month on or after your date of hire.

If you are new to Canada, you have an MSP “statutory waiting period” consisting of the balance of the month of arrival, plus two months. You will be enrolled in the Extended Health Plan on the first day of the month immediately following the waiting period.

Staff Pension Plan

Optional if you apply before the compulsory enrolment date.

Mandatory after 3 years of service.

Under 71 First day of the month on or after your date of hire if you enrol before the compulsory date.

You will be automatically enrolled in this benefit on the first of the month on or after 3 years of service if you do not enrol before the compulsory date.

Part-time continuing appointments

If you have a part-time continuing appointment for 12 months or more and you work at least 50% time, you are eligible for all of the benefits outlined in the table below.

Under 71 You may be eligible for this after 12 months of continuous service. Eligibility is determined by applicable pension legislation. You must have earned 35% of the YMPE (years maximum pensionable earnings) of the year in which your 12 months of service ended. If you become eligible, you will be contacted by the Pension Administration Office. 6.5% of gross annual salary 9.14% of gross annual salary
