BCGEU Okanagan: Benefit Eligibility, Start Dates and Cost

The benefits you are eligible for as a member of the BCGEU Okanagan employee group depend on:

  • if you work full time, part time or hourly,
  • the length of your appointment,
  • the number of hours you work per week, and
  • your age at your date of hire,

Before you enrol in your benefit package, please review the table below to familiarize yourself with:

  • the benefits you are eligible for,
  • whether these benefits are mandatory or optional,
  • the date that each benefit will become effective, and
  • the monthly cost of each benefit.

Once you have decided which of the optional benefits you want to sign up for, please complete the UBC Benefits Sign-On Session to enrol for benefits and sign up for payroll. You will need the enrolment code listed at the bottom of this page to complete this session. Your Benefits Enrolment Code is also included on your Letter of Offer.

Full-time appointments

If you have a full-time monthly paid appointment for 12 months or more, you are eligible for all of the benefits outlined in the table below.

If have a full-time monthly paid appointment for more than 3 months but less than 12 months, you are eligible for the first four benefits listed in the table:

If your full-time monthly paid appointment is extended to a total of 12 months or more, you will:

  • automatically be enrolled in the Disability Benefit Plan,
  • automatically be enrolled in Basic Life Insurance, and
  • be eligible for Optional Life Insurance and AD&D at this time; however, you must submit a Health Statement with your application, which is subject to approval by the insurer; and
  • be eligible for the Staff Pension Plan.

If you have a full-time appointment that is less than 3 months, you are not eligible for benefits. You will still need to complete the UBC Benefits Sign-On Session to enrol for benefits and sign up for payroll.

If you are new to Canada, you have an MSP “statutory waiting period” consisting of the balance of the month of arrival, plus two months. You will be enrolled in the Extended Health Plan on the first day of the month immediately following the waiting period.

$0 Single: $33.44

Single + dependent: $111.66

Family: $111.66

Dental Plan Optional Under 71 First of the month on or after your date of hire. $0 Single: $42.88

Single + dependent: $83.96

Employee and Family Assistance Program Mandatory Under 71 First of the month on or after your date of hire. You will be automatically enrolled in this benefit. $1.20 $2.80

Spouses

Staff Pension Plan Optional if you apply before the compulsory enrolment date.

Mandatory after 3 years of service.

Under 71 First day of the month on or after your date of hire if you enrol before the compulsory date.

You will be automatically enrolled in this benefit on the first of the month on or after 3 years of service if you do not enrol before the compulsory date.

6.5% of gross annual salary 10.0% to $3,500

8.2% between $3,500 and $55,300

10.0% over 55,300 gross annual salary

Part-time appointments

If you have a part-time monthly paid appointment for 12 months or more and you work at least 17.5 hours per week, you are eligible for all of the benefits outlined in the table below.

If have a part-time monthly paid appointment for more than 3 months but less than 12 months and you work at least 17.5 hours per week, you are eligible for the first four benefits listed in the table:

If your part-time monthly paid appointment is extended to a total of 12 months or more, you:

  • will automatically be enrolled in the Disability Benefit Plan,
  • will automatically be enrolled in Basic Life Insurance,
  • will be eligible for Optional Life Insurance and AD&D at this time; however, you must submit a Health Statement with your application, which is subject to approval by the insurer, and
  • may be eligible for the Staff Pension Plan.

If you do not work more than 17.5 hours per week as part of your part-time monthly paid appointment (regardless of your length of appointment), you are not eligible for benefits. You will still need to complete the UBC Benefits Sign-On Session to enrol for benefits and sign up for payroll.

Staff Pension Plan Under 71 Eligibility is determined by applicable pension legislation. You must have earned 35% of the YMPE (years maximum pensionable earnings) of the year in which your 12 months of service ended. If you become eligible, you will be contacted by the Pension Administration Office. 6.5% of gross annual salary 10.0% to $3,500

8.2% between $3,500 and $55,300

10.0% over 55,300 gross annual salary

Hourly paid appointments

If you have an auxiliary appointment of between 3 and 12 months and you work at least 17.5 hours per week, you are eligible for all of the benefits outlined in the table below.

If you have an auxiliary appointment and you work less than 17.5 hours per week, you are not eligible for benefits. You will still need to complete the UBC Benefits Sign-On Session to enrol for benefits and sign up for payroll.
