BCGEU Child Care: Benefit Eligibility, Start Dates and Cost

The benefits you are eligible for as a member of the BCGEU Child Care employee group depend on:

  • if you work full time, part time or hourly,
  • the length of your appointment,
  • the number of hours you work per week, and
  • your age at your date of hire

Before you enrol in your benefit package, please review the table below to familiarize yourself with:

  • the benefits you are eligible for,
  • whether these benefits are mandatory or optional,
  • the date that each benefit will become effective, and
  • the monthly cost of each benefit.

Once you have decided which of the optional benefits you want to sign up for, please complete the UBC Benefits Sign-On Session to enrol for benefits and sign up for payroll. You will need the enrolment code listed below to complete this session. Your Benefits Enrolment Code is also included on your Letter of Offer.

Full-time and part-time (at least 20 hours per week) appointments

If you have a full-time or part-time, monthly or hourly paid appointment for 12 months or more, you are eligible for all of the benefits outlined in the table below.

If have a full-time or part-time monthly or hourly paid appointment for more than 3 months but less than 12 months, you are eligible for the first four benefits listed in the table:

If your full-time or part-time appointment is extended to a total of 12 months or more, you will:

  • automatically be enrolled in the Disability Benefit Plan,
  • automatically be enrolled in Basic Life Insurance, and
  • be eligible for Optional Life Insurance and AD&D at this time; however, you must submit a Health Statement with your application, which is subject to approval by the insurer.

If you have a full-time appointment that is less than 3 months or a part time appointment and you work less than 20 hours per week (regardless of the length of your appointment), you are not eligible for benefits. You will still need to complete the UBC Benefits Sign-On Session to enrol for benefits and sign up for payroll.

If you are new to BC, you have an MSP “statutory waiting period” consisting of the balance of the month of arrival, plus two months. You will be enrolled on the first day of the month that immediately follows the waiting period.

Extended Health Plan Optional Under 71 First day of the month on or after your date of hire.

If you are new to Canada, you have an MSP “statutory waiting period” consisting of the balance of the month of arrival, plus two months. You will be enrolled in the Extended Health Plan on the first day of the month immediately following the waiting period.

Single + dependent: $143.66

Family: $143.66

Dental Plan Optional Under 71 First of the month on or after your date of hire. $0 Single: $48.86

Single + dependent: $92.80

Employee and Family Assistance Program Mandatory Under 71 First of the month on or after your date of hire. You will be automatically enrolled in this benefit. $1.20 $2.80

Spouses

Optional Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

Optional Employee is under age 65 Your spouse is eligible to apply on your date of hire; however, they must submit a Health Statement with their application, which is subject to approval by the insurer. Depends on age, amount and smoker status. Please see the OPT table and AD&D table. $0

Hourly paid appointments of less than 20 guaranteed hours per week

If you have an hourly paid appointment of 12 months or more but you were not guaranteed at least 20 hours a week when you were first hired, you are not initially eligible for benefits. After 3 months of working at least 20 hours per week, contact UBC Financial Operations – Payroll to see if you are eligible for the benefits listed in the table below.

If you have an hourly paid appointment of more than 3 months, but less than 12 months but you were not guaranteed at least 20 hours a week when you were first hired, you are not initially eligible for benefits. After 3 months of work of at least 20 hours per week, contact UBC Financial Operations – Payroll to see if you are eligible for the following benefits:

If your hourly appointment is extended to a total of 12 months or more and you work at least 20 hours per week, you will:

  • automatically be enrolled in the Disability Benefit Plan;
  • automatically be enrolled in Basic Life Insurance; and
  • be eligible for Optional Life Insurance and AD&D at this time; however, you must submit a Health Statement with your application, which is subject to approval by the insurer.

If you work less than 20 hours per week (regardless of the length of your appointment), you are not eligible for benefits. You will still need to complete the UBC Benefits Sign-On Session to enrol for benefits and sign up for payroll.
