Conflict Management Services

MEDIATION PILOT PROJECT

Organizational Development and Learning (ODL) sponsored a pilot mediation program in 2005, offering services to staff and faculty who were experiencing interpersonal conflict.

The pilot adopted the transformative mediation model, a kind of mediation focused on repairing and building the parties’ relationship as distinguished from fixing “their problem.”

One of the goals of the pilot was to foster a supportive working environment based on equity and mutual respect - a goal aligned with the University's vision and mission statement, as set out in Trek 2010, and Focus on People: Workplace Practices at UBC.

The evaluation component of the pilot examined whether the parties in mediation experienced a fair process, respectful communication, and strengthened relationships.  The report on the pilot will be made available to the university community in late 2006.
