Once again, it is time for central reporting of our staff sick leave statistics.
Request: Submission of Your 2014 Sick Leave Stats
As you may be aware, the Human Resources department provides the Executive and the Board of Governors (BoG) an annual report on key health indicators at the University. The report provides a snapshot of the health of our staff and faculty, and includes statistics on the average number of paid sick leave days taken by staff.
Overall for UBC, there was a decrease in the average number of sick days taken in 2013 compared to 2012. This is good news and the Board committee would like to continue monitoring the utilization of sick days.
In response to the Board’s request, please have the Administrator for your faculty/department enter your 2014 statistics by Feb. 13, 2015.
Please assist us by entering your January–December 2014 sick leave statistics using the online reporting tool (www.my.ubc.ca) by Feb. 13, 2015. If you have already entered your statistics into the Sick Leave System, no further action is required. Aggregate Sick Leave Data from 2013 and Prior Years
Benchmark sick leave statistics are provided below. This data is for staff only, and is representative of the faculties and departments who have reported their data using our on-line sick leave reporting system.
- The average number of sick leave days taken per employee in 2013 was 8.5 days, a decrease over the 2012 average of 9.4 days.
- The average number of sick days per employee in 2013 was 9.6 for the Vancouver campus (a decrease from 10.5 in 2012)
- The average number of sick days per employee in 2013 was 2.5 for the Okanagan campus (a decrease from 3.0 days in 2012).
Sick Leave Statistics for Key Employment Groups (2010-2013)
The chart below summarizes the average number of sick leave days taken between 2010 and 2013 for the following employment groups:
- IUOE 882
- CUPE 116
- BCGEU (Childcare)
- CUPE 2950
- Non-Union Technicians & Research Assistants (TRAs)
- CUPE 2278 English Language Instructors
- Management & Professional (M&P) (i.e., AAPS, SUDs, and Excluded M&P)
- BCGEU Okanagan
- Executive Administrative (i.e., excluded clerical staff)
Staff employment groups represented at UBC’s Okanagan campus include: M&P, BCGEU Okanagan, and Executive Administrative. With the exception of BCGEU Okanagan, the other employment groups at the Okanagan campus have been included in their general employment group. For example, M&P employees at the Okanagan campus were included along with M&P employees at the Vancouver campus in the general M&P group.
The chart below is based on submitted sick leave data, and as such may not be completely representative of all departments and faculties (on average, about 50% of staff “full-time equivalents” (FTEs) were captured). In particular, data submitted for the Non-Union Technicians & Research Assistant group is representative of less than 10% of the total number of FTEs in that group.
In addition, the following employment groups are small in size (120 employees or less): Childcare Workers, IUOE 882, CUPE 2278 and Executive Administrative. As such, the average sick time for these groups can be greatly impacted by only a few employees.
Average Number of Sick Days Taken by Employment Group (2010-2013): Both Campuses
For both campuses, the average number of days taken by employee from 2010-2013 was:
- 2010: 7.8
- 2011: 9.0
- 2012: 9.4
- 2013: 8.5
