PD Funding Year Starts April 1, 2013

As of April 1, 2013, the UBC Professional Development Funding Programs for the M&P, CUPE 2950, Executive Administrative, and Non Union Technicians and Research Assistants employee groups will begin accepting applications for the new funding year (April 1, 2013, to March 31, 2014). Staff should review the PD funding guidelines for their employee group before they submit applications:

NEW: Changes to Staff PD Individual Funding Limits

Every year, we review the individual funding limits for PD Funds in coordination with the executive of the employee groups, and on occasion we make adjustments in order to distribute the funds in a sustainable and equitable manner. Over the past few years, we have seen a steady trend of increased fund usage. In order to ensure that this year’s funds are not all depleted prematurely, we have made some adjustments to accommodate projected PD funding requests from staff.

Individual Funding Limits for the New 13/14 Funding Year

  • CUPE 2950 staff : $1,000 ($200 decrease)
  • Executive Administrative Staff : $1,000 ($200 decrease)
  • Non Union Technicians & Research Assistants: $800 ($50 increase)

Please note that there has been no change in the funding amount for Management & Professional Staff (remains at $750).

These changes do not affect the staff tuition waiver benefit.

NEW: TRA PD Award Program Discontinued; Funds Reallocated to TRA PD Fund

We will no longer be offering the TRA PD Award program to Non Union Technicians and Research Assistants. Instead, we have reallocated the Award Program funds to the regular TRA PD Fund. The result is that we are now able to increase the individual PD funding maximum to $800, to provide increased opportunities to support all TRAs with their development.

COMING SOON: For CUPE 2950 & Exec Admin Staff – Lynda.com, an Online Software Tutorial Learning Resource

HR is excited to announce that UBC administrative support staff will have access to Lynda.com, an industry leading software training & tutorial video library. This service will be available by mid-April 2013.

Action Required: Access to the Lynda.com site will require eligible staff to add their work email address in the primary email field in HRMS Self-Service by April 8. Please ask your CUPE 2950 and Exec Admin staff to make this update. Instructions can be found at http://www.hr.ubc.ca/update-your-email/.

The Lynda.com online learning resource has been sponsored through the Job Skills Training Program (JSTP) and Exec Admin PD Fund, and will be offered to all CUPE 2950 and Exec Admin staff free of charge. Lynda.com will replace the Online Expert Computer Tutorial service. We encourage managers to have conversations with their staff regarding how Lynda.com can support staff learning and development plans. Further information will be available on our HR software training webpage and detailed registration communications will be sent to all eligible staff in the coming weeks.

Update: Online Payment Tool – Professional Development Funding

We continue to work towards implementing an online reimbursement process for centrally administered PD funds, as part of the University’s Purchase and Payment Simplification Program. We will keep you advised about the pilot launch of this program for PD fund reimbursement.

Please feel free to contact Susanna Mulligan, PD Funding Programs Manager, UBC Human Resources, if you have any questions.
