Subject: Revised Respectful Environment Statement

Since 2008, UBC has had a Statement on Respectful Environment for Students, Faculty and Staff.  It is a comprehensive statement issued by the UBC Executive about our commitment to a respectful environment, the responsibilities of members of the community, and how to address related concerns.

Amendments to the Workers Compensation Act require employers to have a policy statement on bullying and harassment.  With a few amendments, in the view of UBC and WorkSafeBC, a revised statement will be compliant with the legislation.  We believe the revised statement retains its positive character and addresses bullying and harassment (which was previously referred to as personal harassment).  We have also taken the opportunity to include reference to hazing and the unacceptability of initiation practices that humiliate.

Please take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with the revised statement and share it with faculty, staff, and students as they commence work or learning opportunities in your department or faculty.
