Memo: Request for Proposals to Deliver Workshops on Health Promotion Topics (Aug. 25, 2011)

Memorandum
Date: Aug. 25,  2011
To: Deans, Directors, Department Heads and Administrators
From: Michelle Berner, Director – Total Compensation
Subject: Request for Proposals to Deliver Workshops on Health Promotion Topics

As part of the Focus on People strategy to develop a healthy, sustainable workplace, Human Resources offers Healthy UBC Initiatives, a program that provides staff and faculty free, one hour lunchtime workshops focused on the promotion of health and well-being.

Many of the current workshop presenters are external to the University. In the future, we plan to expand the variety of topics and presenters, as well as highlight the tremendously valuable research that UBC faculty, staff, post-doctoral fellows, and students conduct, which could contribute to improving the health of the University’s own community members. To this end, we are calling for workshop presentation proposals.

Potential presenters should be prepared to deliver 50 minute interactive workshops, specifically relevant to the health and well-being of UBC faculty and staff, focused on current research with practical applications. Presenters can be UBC faculty, staff and students, and would be remunerated for their services.

Examples of topics of interest:

  • Dealing with stress
  • Calcium, Vitamin D and bone health
  • Incorporating fitness into the work day
  • Work/life balance
  • Healthy heart
  • Financial health
  • Parenting and child development
  • Conflict resolution and communication skills

Presentations could focus on the prevention of chronic illness, such as:

  • Mental illness (depression, anxiety, etc.)
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Cancer
  • Chronic pain and fatigue
  • Back pain
  • Arthritis

Proposals will be evaluated and selected on the basis of:

  • Relevance and accessibility for UBC staff and faculty
  • Creative and relevant topics
  • References
  • Interactive presentations
  • Diversity of programming
  • Cost of the workshop
  • Qualifications and credentials of presenters

Applicants should complete the Healthy UBC Initiatives Presenter Proposal Form and return it to hpp_secretary@hr.ubc.ca.
