Memo: Changes to Minimum Wage in British Columbia

Memorandum
Date: April 4, 2011
To: Department Heads, Directors, and Administrators
From: Linda McKnight, Director, Human Resources Advisory Services
Subject: Changes to the British Columbia Minimum Wage

The Government of British Columbia recently announced that there will be a graduated increase to the minimum wage in British Columbia.  More specifically, it was announced that the minimum wage will increase from the current wage of $8.00 hourly, as follows:

May 1, 2011 $8.75 hourly
November 1, 2011 $9.50 hourly
May 1, 2012 $10.25 hourly

Other Changes

  • Effective May 1, 2011, the training wage will be eliminated and all hourly paid employees will be entitled to the general minimum wage.
  • Effective May 1, 2011, a special minimum wage for liquor servers will be phased in.  The new rates are as follows:
May 1, 2011 $8.50 hourly
November 1, 2011 $8.75 hourly
May 1, 2012 $9.00 hourly

Please be aware that effective May 1, 2011, all offers of employment must be at or above the minimum wages specified above.  Further, information from our Human Resources Management System indicates that there are a substantial number of student employees who will fall below the new minimum wages should they still be employed at the time of the staged rate changes.  Therefore, any student or other staff member falling below the new minimum wages at the time of the wage increases will have their hourly rate increased by the Payroll Department.

Please share this information with all UBC Managers.  If you have any questions please contact your Human Resources Advisor.
