Memo: Changes to Optional Life Plan Premiums (Effective Jan. 1, 2016) and Important Change to Determining Dependent Child Optional Life Coverage (effective Mar. 1, 2015)

Subject: Changes to Optional Life Plan Premiums (Effective Jan. 1, 2016) and Important Change to Determining Dependent Child Optional Life Coverage (effective Mar. 1, 2015)


The UBC Optional Employee and Spouse Life plan is an employee-paid plan that provides benefits to your designated beneficiary (ies) should you, your spouse or your dependent child die. Participation in the Optional Life plan is voluntary and coverage is in addition to your Basic Group Life coverage.

There will be changes to the premiums you pay (effective Jan. 1, 2016) and how to determine dependent optional life coverage (effective Mar. 1, 2015).

These changes are summarized below:

[1] Premium Rate Decrease – Jan. 1, 2016

Each year, with the support of our Benefits Consultant, the experience of the Optional Life plan is reviewed. Due to favourable claims experience this past year, a decrease to the optional life premium rates is warranted. Effective Jan. 1, 2016, the premium rates will decrease by approximately 5% and your new, lower premium will be reflected on your Dec. 31, 2015 pay advice (premiums are taken one month in advance).

For those enrolled in the Optional Employee Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Plan, these premium rates remain unchanged for the upcoming year.

The new monthly Optional Life premiums are shown on this PDF table. To determine your monthly premium for the upcoming year, find the age bracket, smoker status and coverage amount for you and/or your spouse.

If you are unsure what your Optional Life coverage amount is, log in to the UBC Faculty and Staff Self-Service website with your CWL username and password and click on “myBenefits”, then “View Benefit Enrolments”. You will need VPN if you are accessing Self-Service from off-campus.

The Optional Life maximum is $750,000 (for the employee or spouse). If you would like to increase your current coverage, the first step is to complete the UBC application form and submit the original to UBC Payroll.  UBC Payroll will review your application and email you the Sun Life Health Statement.  For more information on how to apply, including a link to the application form, please visit:  http://www.hr.ubc.ca/benefits/life-insurance/optional-life-insurance/.

[2] Important Change to Determining Dependent Child Optional Life Coverage – Mar. 1, 2015

Your children and your spouse’s children (other than foster children) are considered dependent children if they are not married or in any other formal union recognized by law, entirely dependent on you for financial support and:

  • under age 19; or
  • between the ages of 19 and 25 if they are a full-time student attending an educational institution recognized under the Income Tax Act (Canada); or
  • any age if approved by Sun Life for disabled status due to a physical or mental disability before reaching the limiting age.

A child may not be considered to be a dependent of more than one UBC employee. In other words, if both parents are UBC employees, only one claim is payable.

Determining Coverage

Following is the old and new language regarding dependent child optional life coverage. The essence of the change is that for all employee optional life applications approved on or after March 1, 2015, the dependent child’s optional life coverage will be calculated based on the employee’s coverage, and not the spouse’s coverage.

Effective Mar. 1, 2015: 

For each $25,000 unit of coverage you purchase for yourself, you will receive $5,000 of coverage for each dependent child at no extra charge.

Prior to Mar. 1, 2015:

If you have an eligible spouse who was approved for Spouse Optional Life prior to March 1, 2015, you will receive $5,000 of coverage for each dependent child for each $25,000 unit of spouse coverage (no extra charge). Otherwise, the coverage for each dependent child will be calculated based on the coverage you purchase for yourself ($5,000 for each $25,000 unit of your coverage).

[3] Other Changes

If you would like to increase/decrease your coverage, cancel coverage, change your smoking status or beneficiary, complete the appropriate change form available from www.hr.ubc.ca/benefits/forms/#life-insurance.
