Subject: Disability Benefit Plan – Premium Holiday Ending August 2015
The long-term disability plan for eligible BCGEU Okanagan members is called the Disability Benefit Plan (DBP). This is a mandatory, employee-paid plan that provides a monthly income after a six month waiting period for those who meet the definition of total disability under the plan. This plan is administered by Sun Life, with oversight from your union (BCGEU Okanagan) and UBC. Premiums for this plan are deducted from each of your paycheques.
BCGEU Okanagan employees enrolled in the DBP have been on a “premium holiday” since the Jan. 1-15, 2015 pay period. Under this premium holiday, you have had DBP plan coverage, but have not had to pay premiums. This premium holiday of eight months was put in place because there was a surplus fund from the wind-up of the old self-insured plan.
Your premium holiday concludes at the end of Augugst, 2015. After that, regular DBP premium deductions will resume (on Sept. 15, 2015, for monthly employees and on Sept. 23, 2015, for hourly employees). The premium rate that applies for the remainder of 2015 is 0.676% of your earnings.
A BCGEU Okanagan DBP Governance Committee will continue to regularly review the disability plan to ensure that it meets the needs of members and remains financially competitive.
