BEST Workplace Language Program

Important Notice:

It is with deep sadness that we inform you that Gary Pharness, UBC’s provider of the BEST Workplace Language Program for the last 21 years, suddenly passed away this May.

We are currently in the process of re-assessing our workplace language needs and hope to have a program in place in Spring 2012.  Please send an email to the MOST Program Desk (mostreg@hr.ubc.ca) with “BEST Program” in the subject line should you wish to be placed on a waiting list.

What is BEST?

BEST is an English program, designed for UBC employees, based on a philosophy that learners become more literate by working collaboratively in a supportive environment. Learners share what they have written around the worktable so that they can also practice speaking and listening skills.

How Does the Program Work?

Learners attend class for a total of 3 hours each week over a 12-week period. The class size is small with a maximum of 10-12 participants. Up to two instructors work with each class allowing for sufficient one-on-one time.

Who Would Benefit from the Program?

The BEST program is designed to benefit anyone who would like to:

  • learn to write memos and messages with ease
  • gain better writing and communication skills to help the achievement of personal and career goals
  • learn skills to avoid language or communication breakdowns at work
  • complete their Grade 12 equivalency in a supportive environment

Questions?

UBC employees who have questions about the BEST program can contact Maura Da Cruz at 604.822.8147 or maura@hr.ubc.ca.
