eRecruit and Chrome
Although Chrome is not an officially supported browser, we recently fixed a problem that had been occurring over the past year. Chrome was suppressing pop-up error messages when used with the external eRecruit posting sites and short URLs. This made it especially difficult for faculty applicants where there’s more opportunity to miss mandatory data-entry fields. If errors occurred, applicants were oblivious to problems and, for no reason obvious to them, prevented from submitting their applications.
Thanks to hard work by our IT folks, eRecruit error messages are now visible in Chrome (as they are in all other browsers).
New Earnings Code for Post Docs
Earlier in the year, the FEL earnings code was changed to stop deducting income tax. This was due to it being the earnings code used to pay students (primarily GTAs and GRAs). These amounts are effectively deemed similar/the same as scholarship earnings.
A side effect of this was that Postdoctoral Research Fellows, who are also paid FEL earnings, ceased to pay income tax. It has been determined that Post Doc earnings should continue to be taxed.
To correct this problem, a new earnings code has been created: PFL (Postdoctoral Fellowship). All current and future Post Docs are being changed from FEL to PFL in HRMS. Going forward, administrators should use PFL rather than FEL on Faculty Appt forms when hiring Postdoctoral Research Fellows.
