New Careers Website

For Faculty and Staff

The new Careers website launched June 12, 2014. It aims to better highlight the people and the opportunities that exist across UBC. In addition to its fresh, new look, the site introduces new features and content based on the work developing a career navigation framework and the UBC employer story.

Highlights include:

  • Six staff career categories to provide transparency into the types of roles available. All staff roles have been mapped to the six categories. Each career category page on the site shows current openings in each category.
  • Introduction to the resources that are available to support faculty and staff to  think about their careers, including the introduction of Pooja Khandelwal as the Career Navigation and Transition Consultant.
  • UBC staff and faculty career stories, intended to share career possibilities at UBC and inspire those within and outside the university.
  • The “UBC Advantage” – a clear articulation of what UBC offers as an employer and what makes us different, based on five elements.

We hope you take time to explore the site and come back to it often as you think about your career and the career of others.

Information Security Standards now available for review

Oliver Grüter-Andrew, Chief Information Office, has requested feedback on the drafted Information Security Standards. As part of the University’s continuing investment in improving UBC’s information security, a complete set of Information Security Standards for the university has now been drafted following a six-month consultation process. The Standards will be finalized on August 15th, after a period of community review.  Feedback on a model for an implementation roadmap is also appreciated. Information about the standards and the implementation roadmap can be found at .

Please provide Policy  feedback  by July 18th on the contents of the Standards and proposed implementation roadmap so any necessary changes can be made before these documents are published in final form on August 15th.  This information can be provided via  feedback form or by email to


2014 Coach Internship Award Recipients

Coaching@UBC consists of 70 certified Coaches offering free one-on-one coaching services to UBC faculty and staff. In order to continue to build the capacity of the Coaching@UBC program they offer the Coaching Internship. For 2014, Coaching@UBC has selected 9 Coach Internship Award Recipients.

One on One Interviews

UBC is currently featuring one-on-one interviews at The interviews, an ongoing series aimed at getting ‘behind the scenes’ with senior leadership at UBC. Currently there are two interviews: Lisa Castle, VP Human Resources and John Hepburn, VP Research & International

They answer a set of diverse questions, such as:

  • What Quality do you most admire in a leader?
  • Who are your favourite writers?
  • What advice would you give a young student just starting out?

Hosted by the President’s Office and Human Resources, and produced by Ceremonies & Events, this event welcomes staff to the new academic year and is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a complimentary BBQ lunch, live entertainment by the Mazacote Latin band, information booths, and the camaraderie of your staff colleagues.

As the department contact for this event,  you were sent an email regarding registering attendees from your department.

You will register all attendees in your department online at Please use the RSVP code STAFFBBQ14. The RSVP deadline is Monday, August 11, 2013.

Based on your online registration list, the Ceremonies Office will send the appropriate number of wristbands via Campus Mail to you between August 25 and September 5. You will be responsible for distributing the wristbands to attendees in your department.

Staff who miss the August 11 registration deadline can still register on the day of the event by providing their full name, department, and employee number at the onsite registration tables. (Note: food cannot be guaranteed for day-of registrants.)

A reminder, this event is for UBC employees with “staff” appointments (not faculty or student appointments). Please contact your HR Advisor or Associate if you have questions about employee eligibility.



Please ensure staff in your department don’t miss out! Let them know about this event at staff meetings this summer. Print and post the event poster in your area.



Help make the Welcome Back BBQ waste free (well, almost)! Please encourage staff to bring a water bottle and recycle or compost everything at the event (except straws and plastic wrap). Onsite sustainability attendants will be available to help and answer questions.



Staff who attend the BBQ are encouraged to share their experiences and tweet photos using #staffbbq.
