To help the campus community prepare for an earthquake the University is participating in the province-wide ShakeOut BC earthquake preparedness exercise on Oct. 15 at 10:15 a.m. to Drop, Cover and Hold on.
Practicing what to do in an earthquake helps you be ready to react quickly, as does knowing what to do afterwards.
ShakeOut BC is also a timely reminder to develop a self-recovery plan and to make or check your emergency kits. A thorough list of things to consider having in your emergency kit at work or at home can be found here. Emergency and first-aid kits can be purchased through St Johns, Canadian Safety Supplies, 72 Hours and the Red Cross.
If you’ve registered for UBC Alert, you’ll receive a text message at 10.15 a.m. – this alert will clearly state that this is a drill. UBC Alert is an important part of maintaining safety and security during an emergency so it is important that your phone number is up to date in Self-Service: log onto www.msp.ubc.ca to make sure your information is correct.
