Pilot Rent-Geared-to-Income programs for 2018

The implementation framework for two pilot Rent Geared to Income Rental (RGI) housing program variations (one for staff and one for faculty) were approved by the Board of Governors on June 14, 2017 as follow-through on earlier commitments of the UBC Housing Action Plan for the Vancouver campus.

The target launch date for these pilot programs will be Spring 2018 when the next Faculty Staff rental buildings are brought on-stream.

Application forms and instructions will be available closer to that date.

The programs and eligibility are briefly summarized below.

Staff Rent Geared to Income Rental (RGI) housing program

A Rent-Geared-to-Income program providing up to 100 staff members with accommodation in Village Gate Homes apartment units, paying rent capped at 30% of their pre-tax household income.

  • Eligibility: UBC full-time staff the in good standing on the Vancouver campus who meet all the following:
    • have worked at UBC for at least 1 year or are term employees who have accumulated three or more years of continuous service;
    • have a gross household income no more than $64,500;
    • have no more than $100,000 in assets.
  • Tenant Selection: Lottery amongst eligible applicants (for the 1st round pilot assignments), followed by first-come first served approach to turnover spots.  The Staff RGI waitlist will be established and administered by UBC.  Means testing confirmation will be expected of successful applicants at first occupancy and annually thereafter.
  • Maximum stay in the program is 10 years, after which the tenant must pay regular faculty staff rates to stay in the unit.

Faculty Temporary Rental Housing Support (TRHS) program

A Rent-Geared-to-Income program providing transitional support to up to 10 relocating new faculty members in Village Gate Homes apartment units,  paying rent capped at 30% of their pre-tax household income.

  • Eligibility:  UBC full time tenure stream faculty who meet all the following:
    • Relocating with children from outside the Lower Mainland;
    • have a gross household income no more than $99,500, and
    • have no more than $100,000 in assets less the value of outstanding student loans.
  • Tenant Selection: merit-based review, adjudicated by Provost office with endorsement from Dean and a Faculty. TRHS waitlist will be established and administered by UBC.  Means testing confirmation will be expected of successful applicants at first occupancy and annually thereafter.
  • Maximum stay in program is 2 years, after which the tenant must pay regular faculty staff rates to stay in the unit.
