The 2012 Travelling Health Fair will run from January 30-February 10, 2012. Registration is now open to faculty and staff who are hosting the Travelling Health Fair in their various buildings (see below for 2012 locations).
Schedules for individual appointments are now available to all staff/faculty.
We encourage all participants to register for only one appointment, and visit the Welcome Table to see about additional appointments (if space allows).
Acupuncture consultation and assessment with Traditional Chinese Medicine tongue and pulse diagnosis. Experience acupuncture and ask questions pertaining to your health.
The Anxiety Screening is an opportunity to learn more about the illness (and its many forms), complete a brief questionnaire, speak one-on-one privately with a clinician and find out about the range of community resources available. This is not to diagnose, but rather to learn from speaking to a clinician and be guided in the right direction on where you can seek help.
Please fast for 2 hrs before your scheduled session to allow for accurate blood sugar results.
This screening with a Registered Nurse will include a screening of your Total Cholesterol and Blood Glucose levels. Both tests are a routine part of preventive health care as they can indicate your risk for heart disease and diabetes. The nurse will interpret your results, discuss normal ranges, and provide you with advice on improving your test results and general health if needed. Both tests require only a small finger prick.
Loose, flexible clothing and stable shoes are helpful but not essential to complete the screen. The tests likely won’t make you sweaty but involve moving your arms and legs in a number of directions.
Often faulty movement patterns go undetected until an injury results. Using the Functional Movement Screen the Physiotherapist will identify those faulty patterns and provide you with preliminary advice on how to correct them. Research has shown that people who score below 14 on the FMS are more than 11 times more likely to sustain an injury. Participants will receive their FMS score as well as specific exercise and physiotherapy recommendations.
Spend 20 minutes with a Registered Massage Therapist and receive a fully clothed chair massage session. The session will begin with a brief assessment identifying areas of tightness and asymmetry in your muscles. The therapist will then work on those dysfunctional muscles and finish with ergonomic and stretching advice. Loose flexible clothing is helpful but not essential for this session.

General Information about the UBC Travelling Health Fair
The UBC Travelling Health Fair takes place annually for two weeks in January-February. Health Promotion Programs travels to different UBC workplaces with a team of certified health clinicians offering free, confidential mental and physical health assessments, such as anxiety screenings, nutritional consultations, posture checks, blood glucose and cholesterol screenings. Most of these screenings are also related to those covered by the benefits covered by the extended health or Employee Family Assistance Program for most UBC staff and faculty. Staff and faculty members are encouraged to sign up to check their health as a preventative measure, and consider using their benefits plans as preventative measures to enable them to live healthy, successful lives.
Every year in December, the Health Promotion Programs invites departments/units to act as hosts for one day of the Travelling Health Fair. These hosting departments/units will book rooms for the various clinicians and help promote the fair to staff/faculty throughout their building. In exchange for their support of the fair, their own staff and faculty members will have first priority in booking their appointments.
The 2011 Travelling Health Fair visited 9 different locations, including the Diamond Health Care Centre and Robson Square. Over 300 staff and faculty participated.
