Re: Bargaining Bulletin #9 – Collective Bargaining 2010/11: Update
The purpose of this memorandum is to provide you with an update on developments in collective bargaining at UBC. An overview of collective bargaining (including information on the bargaining units) is available at http://www.hr.ubc.ca/collective-bargaining/.
Bargaining continues to unfold with several of our staff unions, and the tone of negotiations is generally positive. While the process is not proceeding quickly, we met with CUPE 116 twice in February, and are currently looking for more dates in April.
We also met with CUPE 2950 twice in February, again last week, and have committed to March 30 and April 20.
We returned to the table with CUPE 2278. We have met twice with the bargaining team for the teaching assistants, tutors and markers in March, and are meeting again on April 5. We have met once with the instructors in the English Language Institute in March, and are working at scheduling more dates this spring.
We have negotiated with BCGEU (child care employees) on seven occasions, and are scheduled to bargain again on April 6th. These negotiations are further along on substantive issues, and the bargaining teams are committed to working through a difficult matter.
Just last week BCGEU at the Okanagan campus indicated that bargaining could commence on that agreement towards the end of April. Proposals will be exchanged on April 28th, and four dates have been confirmed for May.
Thank you for your interest. We will continue to provide updates as the process unfolds.
