The purpose of this memorandum is to provide you with an update on developments in collective bargaining at UBC. An overview of collective bargaining (including information on the bargaining units) is available at http://www.hr.ubc.ca/collective-bargaining/.

We are pleased to announce that both the UBC Board of Governors and BCGEU at the Okanagan campus have ratified a five-year collective agreement. The term of the agreement will be for the period July 1, 2014, through June 30, 2019. This agreement is now fully approved and in effect.

Members of BCGEU (Okanagan) ratified their agreement in late September, with the vote receiving a “strong majority” in favour. This agreement, which has also received approval from the Public Sector Employers’ Council (PSEC) and the University Public Sector Employers Association (UPSEA,) covers approximately 300 administrative, library and facilities staff as well as teaching assistants at the Okanagan campus.

The agreement between the University and BCGEU (Okanagan) falls within the Provincial Government’s 2014 Economic Stability Mandate. To date, a number of settlements across the province have been reached within this mandate: http://www.fin.gov.bc.ca/psec/bargaining/2014%20Bargaining%20Status.pdf.

As mentioned in Bargaining Bulletin #8, we will commence bargaining with CUPE 116 on Oct. 2 and meet again on Oct. 3. AAPS bargaining will resume on Oct. 9 with the assistance of facilitator/mediator Irene Holden, followed by dates on Oct. 10 and 24. Bargaining resumes with the Faculty Association on Oct. 27.
