Re: Bargaining Bulletin #8 – Collective Bargaining Update
The purpose of this memorandum is to provide you with an update on developments in collective bargaining at UBC. An overview of collective bargaining (including information on the bargaining units) is available at http://www.hr.ubc.ca/collective-bargaining/.
We hope you have enjoyed a fine start to the year, and have been following the coverage of the new President’s installation and his vision for UBC.
As well, it is with much relief for many students, faculty and staff at UBC and the whole Province that there is a tentative and longer term resolution of the BC Teachers Federation strike.
As we mentioned in Bargaining Bulletin #7, the ratification processes are underway for our first settlement at UBC with BCGEU at the Okanagan campus. The agreement has received approval from the University Public Sector Employers Association (UPSEA). The Union’s ratification process is underway and we will hear early next week. Should the vote be positive, this agreement is being recommended to the Board of Governors for ratification on Sept. 30.
In discussions with AAPS, we have adjusted dates to resume bargaining from this month to Oct. 9, 10 and 24. As the relationship between AAPS and the University has grown increasingly strained over time, we have also agreed to engage the services of mediator/facilitator Irene Holden to assist us in having the conversations we need to have in bargaining.
We will begin bargaining with CUPE 116 on Oct. 2 and have four dates scheduled next month. Dates are being canvassed to get started with CUPE 2278 and 2950 and we are hopeful that those sets of negotiations will get underway in October as well.
We are actively discussing dates to commence negotiations with BCGEU at the Vancouver campus.
Finally, a reminder that negotiations between the University and the Faculty Association resume at the end of October. Confirmed dates are Oct. 27-29, Nov. 20 and Dec. 11-12.
