Re: Bargaining Bulletin #4 – Collective Bargaining Update

The purpose of this memorandum is to provide you with an update on developments in collective bargaining at UBC. An overview of collective bargaining (including information on the bargaining units) is available at

Further to the update we provided you in our bargaining bulletin last week, four days of bargaining with the Faculty Association unfolded last week. Generally, the dialogue continues and the teams are fully committed to the discussions and the process.

You may recall that our goal was to conclude bargaining in May with either a tentative agreement, or resolution by proceeding to binding arbitration in the fall. In retrospect, that was likely ambitious, and three more days have been scheduled this month, including one this week, as well as June 12 and 23. It is hoped that both parties will be in a position to table their proposals for all cost items (including general salary increases) tomorrow.

You may recall that pursuant to the Government’s bargaining mandates (2014’s is the Economic Stability Mandate), public sector employers are required to submit compensation proposals, before tabling in bargaining, to the Public Sector Employers’ Council (PSEC) for review and approval for consistency with the Government’s mandate. The University’s proposals for bargaining with the Faculty Association have been submitted in accordance with this process.

Thank you for your interest. We will be providing information as developments occur.
