Re: Bargaining Bulletin #4 – Collective Bargaining – 2010 (Settlement with AAPS / Mediation with UBC Faculty Association )

The purpose of this memorandum is to provide you with an update on developments in collective bargaining at UBC.

An overview of collective bargaining and the descriptions of the bargaining units were outlined in Bargaining Bulletin #1 available at http://www.hr.ubc.ca/collective-bargaining/.

On Wednesday, June 30th, the University reached a tentative agreement with AAPS, representing approximately 3,100 management and professional staff at both the Okanagan and Vancouver campuses.  The agreement, which is consistent with the Provincial Government’s Mandate 2010 (http://www.aved.gov.bc.ca/psec/bargaining2010/), is for the period from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2012, and is subject to ratification by both parties.  Details of the tentative agreement will be communicated prior to the ratification processes that will be undertaken this month.

The University and the Faculty Association are engaging in mediation today and tomorrow in an effort to resolve our differences and reach a new collective agreement.  We have agreed to retain Mr. Mark Brown for this purpose.  Mr. Brown is an experienced mediator, having worked at the BC Labour Relations Board for a number of years with responsibility for the Board’s mediation services.  He has worked with the Faculty Association and the University in the past and has been helpful in assisting the parties to reach agreements.

Thank you for your interest.  We will keep you apprised of developments as they occur at http://www.hr.ubc.ca/collective-bargaining/.
