Re: Bargaining Bulletin #27 – Collective Bargaining 2010/11: Update
The purpose of this memorandum is to provide you with an update on developments in collective bargaining at UBC. An overview of collective bargaining (including information on the bargaining units) is available at http://www.hr.ubc.ca/collective-bargaining/.
As we advised you on Thursday in Bargaining Bulletin #26, the University had filed an application at the Labour Relations Board (LRB) for the appointment of a mediator to provide third party assistance in the negotiations with CUPE 2278. Such expertise has been called upon in every set of negotiations with CUPE 2278 since at least the early 1990s. The application was accepted by the LRB that afternoon and a mediator, Mr. Mark Atkinson, was appointed. He advised the parties yesterday that he was available to begin mediated talks in early May, and both the Union and the University have confirmed their availability at that time.
It is important to note that CUPE 2278 is not permitted to engage their members in any strike activity while the parties wait to begin and during the mediation process.
Thank you for your interest. We will continue to provide updates as the process unfolds.
