Re: Bargaining Bulletin #2 – Collective Bargaining Update

The purpose of this memorandum is to provide you with an update on developments in collective bargaining at UBC. An overview of collective bargaining (including information on the bargaining units) is available at

We commenced 2014 bargaining yesterday by exchanging proposals with the Faculty Association. The proposals can be found here (Faculty Association | UBC). The parties began the explanation of their proposals, and are meeting again today. We are committed to several bargaining dates in May with a view to completing the process in June with either a tentative agreement (that is the goal), or resolution by binding arbitration. Previous rounds of bargaining have gone on for months, and that has taken its toll on the relationship between the Faculty Association and the University, and been unsettling for faculty members.

Staff bargaining is expected to get under way in May with some of the seven unions and AAPS. We will keep you apprised as dates are firmed up in the late spring/early summer. At this time, we are in the process of preparing UBC’s staff bargaining plan for review and approval by the Provincial Government.

You may recall that pursuant to the Government’s bargaining mandates (2014’s is the Economic Stability Mandate), public sector employers are required to submit bargaining plans. It is a condition of the University’s budget letter from the Provincial Government that we comply with the bargaining mandate.

Thank you for your interest. We will be providing information as developments occur.
