Time to Get a Coach?
Some people say there are more “new years’ resolutions” made in each Fall than each January because so many people find the summer a great time to reflect on their career and their life. A coach can be a real asset to someone looking to reflect and take action.
Working with a coach is a helpful way to take stock of what you’ve done so far in 2018 and make plans for 2018-19. Some questions that you may want to work through with a coach:
- What have you accomplished so far in 2018?
- What goals do you want to set for the second half of the year?
- What obstacles will I need to overcome?
- What changes do you want to make?
- What mindset do you want to be in?

Coaches@UBC – Kelly Labrecque
Welcome to Coaches@UBC. This is a new monthly feature where we will meet a Coach from our Community of Coaches who provides 1-on-1 Coaching Services to UBC faculty and staff.
To kick off Coaches@UBC, we feature a UBC Internal Coach: Kelly Labrecque, Clinic Manager at The Lung Centre located at Gordon & Leslie Diamond Health Care Centre.
Tell about your role at UBC
I’ve been working as the Clinic Manager at The Lung Centre (Department of Respiratory Medicine) for the past 9 years. I joined the Coaching @ UBC program two years ago through the Coach Internship Program and became a fully credentialed coach in October last year.
How did you decide to become a coach?
I’d been looking for a way to create more connection in a world where it feels like virtual relationships are replacing real life connection. My friend Catharine Chang (and Coaching@UBC Program Manager) suggested that I take an introductory coaching course at the Coaches Training Institute (CTI). I thought it would just be a fun weekend and an opportunity to learn some new management skills. Instead, it completely changed my life! I discovered that coaching was what I’d been looking for – a way to connect co-creatively and help others create a life of meaning and purpose.
What does being a leader mean to you?
Leadership is a state of being. It’s daring to fail. It’s having the courage to blaze your own path and the vision to dream the future into existence. Being a leader is a highly creative process – as a leader, you have the opportunity to create things how you want them to be. One thing I’ve observed when coaching leaders is that we often focus on what we need to do to improve our leadership capacity versus who we need to be. We are all amazing doers and I’m sure everyone reading this has a long to do list! One thing I would offer is try making a ‘to be’ list instead. I believe every person is a leader and we all have the opportunity to make a creative impact on the world from the place we are at now. Don’t wait until you have the top job before you begin working on your leadership skills. You’re a leader right now in the role you are in today!
