Posted by: | February 22, 2011 | no comments

UBC is one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers in 2011, for the fourth consecutive year. UBC is one of only two post-secondary institutions in Canada to receive this recognition, and the only one in BC.

Some of the reasons why University of British Columbia was selected as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers 2011:

  • in partnership with other universities, UBC’s Equity Office participates in equity research projects such as the “International Equity Benchmarking Project”, which is dedicated to developing and ensuring the maintenance of equitable practices
  • the office also publishes an annual report and newsletter, “Equity Matters“, to keep members of the community informed of the progress and development of current initiatives
  • finalized a formal equity and diversity plan that outlines diversity goals and commitments, methods to track progress and development, and key personnel responsible for overseeing the implementation of goals
  • is developing a pilot program in partnership with the “Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing” and the “Open Door” group to recruit individuals with disabilities
  • created an Aboriginal strategic plan in 2008 to enhance recruitment, support, and advancement initiatives for Aboriginal faculty and staff — the plan also includes curriculum programming to ensure Aboriginal issues and perspectives are represented within academia
  • engaged in a campus-wide “Positive Space” campaign to increase awareness of LGBT issues and offers educational workshops for faculty, staff, and students on the impact of homophobia and heterosexism
