UBC’s Benefits insurance provider, Sun Life, is changing the claims process for custom-made orthopaedic shoes or orthotics purchases.
View the PDF memo from Sun Life.
Effective Aug. 1, 2010, a detailed lab invoice will be required when you submit your claim. The detailed lab invoice should include an itemized breakdown of the raw materials used, their cost, and any other associated costs incurred to manufacture the custom-made shoes or orthotics.
The new requirement will expedite the reimbursement process and will allow you to receive reimbursement quicker. It will also assist Sun Life in the detection and management of potentially fraudulent practices by some suppliers. Make sure you request this invoice from your provider for purchases on or after Aug. 1, 2010.

I’m a UBC student and my doctor recommends that I have orthotics made for my feet. I didn’t buy the extended health plan and I heard from a chiropractor that UBC students get a $400 health coverage for things like orthotics. I’m wondering if I qualify for the claim and how can I go about making the claim?
I thank you for your time and attention regarding this matter.
Kelly
