We’re very pleased to announce that UBC has been nominated for Innovative Workplace in this year’s YWCA Women of Distinction Awards.
As one of BC’s largest employers, UBC has more than 19,000 faculty, staff, and student employees at our campuses across the province. Our nomination centres around our many initiatives to create an extraordinary workplace experience for our employees.
Our nomination focuses on several initiatives, including the following:
UBC Childcare has opened five new childcare centres at the Vancouver campus this past year, providing support for employees and student families. The total size of our childcare centres is the largest of any university in North America.
Breastfeeding spaces have been designated on the Okanagan campus (with five spaces planned for the Vancouver campus) for the comfort of students, employees, guests and visitors to the campus.
In June 2008, President Stephen Toope introduced UBC’s “Respectful Environment Statement” for students and employees. The Statement speaks to the university’s freedoms and responsibilities and provides the guiding principles to build an environment in which respect, civility, diversity, opportunity and inclusion are valued.
UBC has developed and is about to launch an Equity and Diversity Strategic Plan which will address equity and diversity for students and employees.
Other initiatives of note:
- Our Focus on People program
- UBC’s Learning Exchange program
- The Healthy Workplace Initiative Program Fund
- Managing At UBC (a program to support new managers)
- Leave for Change program
- Work-Life and Relocation Services Centre
This is only a small list of our initiatives to create an innovative workplace for all employees. For a full list, please contact us at communications@hr.ubc.ca.
