Benefits Coverage – Travelling for Leisure

If you are enrolled in the UBC extended health plan, you are covered for medical expenses while travelling outside of BC. However, there are limitations and exclusions that you should be familiar with. Your family members are also covered if they meet the definition of dependent and you have enrolled them under the plan.

Your coverage under the UBC extended health plan includes:

The Medical Services Plan (MSP) is the provincial government’s medical insurance plan. MSP is mandatory for all eligible BC residents and their dependents. If you are planning a temporary, but extended absence from BC, you may be eligible to receive coverage for up to 24 months under the MSP.

The Extended Health Care plans cover you for reasonable and customary charges arising from physician-recommended and medically necessary services and supplies. Coverage for medical expenses depends on the expense and whether your situation is a medical emergency.

UBC’s extended health coverage includes out-of-province/country coverage for assistance in the event of a medical emergency. Emergency travel assistance is provided by Europ Assistance, one of the world’s largest providers of this kind of service. Go to the Emergency Medical Coverage page.

The Dental Care plans provide reimbursement based on the Dental Association Fee Guide for a wide range of dental services, from your regular check-ups to major procedures such as root canals and crowns. These procedures may be provided by a licensed Dentist, Denturist, Dental Hygienist and Anesthetist.

The Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) provides confidential, self-referred counseling or other assistance to you or your family members.
