Leaving UBC

There are different circumstances that may lead you to leave UBC. Perhaps you are retiring or pursuing new opportunities. What happens to your UBC benefits? This section provides benefits-related information and resources to help you transition into the next stage of your life.

Retiring Employees

Whether you are retiring or resigning, if you are age 55 or older, you may be eligible for UBC retirement benefits. To help you learn more about retirement and UBC benefits, consider the following:

Resigning Employees

If you are leaving UBC, the following benefits will be affected:

Medical Services Plan (MSP)

When you leave UBC, you must arrange for individual coverage through MSP or through your new employer, as all BC residents are required to have MSP coverage. For more information, visit the MSP section of the UBC Benefits website.

The date that your UBC MSP coverage ends is determined as follows:

UBC Employment End Date MSP Coverage
On or before the 15th of the month Ends on the last day of that month
After the 15th of the month Ends on the last day of the following month

Extended Health & Dental

If you have any outstanding claims by the time you leave UBC, send them to Sun Life as soon as possible. Sun Life does not reimburse expenses that are submitted more than 90 days after your coverage ends. For more information, contact UBC Benefits or Sun Life.

The date that your UBC Extended Health and Dental coverage ends is determined as follows:

UBC Employment End Date Extended Health & Dental Coverage
On or before the 15th of the month Ends on the last day of that month
After the 15th of the month Ends on the last day of the following month

Individual heath and dental insurance products are available from a number of insurance companies, including UBC’s provider, Sun Life.   The advantage of choosing a product with Sun Life is that you will not be required to submit medical information as part of your application.  For more information on Sun Life’s individual insurance products view the information on the Sunlife My Choice Plans, or call Sun Life directly at 1-877-893-9893.

Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP)

Your UBC EFAP coverage ends three months after the 1st of the month following your last day of employment with UBC. For more information, visit the UBC EFAP section of the UBC Benefits website.

Sick Leave Benefit

Sick leave has no cash value. You receive this benefit only when you are actively working at UBC. For more information, visit the Leaves section of the UBC Benefits website.

Income Replacement Plan (IRP) and Disability Benefit Plan (DBP)

Your UBC IRP/DBP coverage ends on your last day of employment with UBC. However, in some cases, you may still be eligible to receive IRP/DBP benefits. To learn more about IRP/DBP benefits after you leave UBC, visit the Income Replacement Plan section of the UBC Benefits website.

Basic Life, Optional Life and AD & D Insurance Plans

Your Basic Life, Optional Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance plans end on your last day of employment with UBC. However, there are options and opportunities available for you to change your coverage into an individual insurance policy or opt for a different one. UBC Pension Plan

If you are a member of the UBC Staff or Faculty Pension Plan, you will need to look at your pension contributions when you leave UBC. For more information, visit the Pensions section of the UBC Benefits website.

Tuition Fee Benefit

Your UBC Tuition Fee Benefit ends on your last day of employment with UBC. However, if you are taking a course that began before your last day, you will continue to be covered by the UBC Tuition Fee Benefit, provided you already applied for and received the benefit.

Vacation Leave (Staff Only)

If you have unused vacation time, it will be paid out either on your last pay cheque or by printed cheque. For more information, contact UBC  Payroll.

Maternity & Adoption SUB Plans

If you are on the Maternity or Adoption SUB Plan, your benefit will end as of your last day of employment. Please note that if you are employed as a UBC staff member, you will be required to repay the amount of your SUB top-up. For more information, contact Pat Dollard in Financial Services.
