Benefits Coverage Eligibility
for Newly Hired Faculty

This outline is for information purposes only. All terms and conditions are governed by the arrangements made by the University and where applicable, by the Faculty Association in the case of their members. In the event of a discrepancy, the official document shall prevail.

For the purposes of benefits administration, "Faculty" includes both members and non-members of the Faculty Association, Librarians and Program Directors in Continuing Studies.

The benefits listed in the charts below represent only the benefits for which new faculty must enroll through the online benefits enrollment process.  There are other benefits and entitlements such as leaves, tuition waivers, Professional Development Reimbursement Fund (PDR) and vacation that don't require an enrollment form.

Eligibility Requirements

The benefits faculty are eligible for and when they come into effect may depend on the length and type of your faculty appointment, whether you meet minimum salary requirements, and your age as of your date of hire.

The normal eligibility requirements for pensions and benefits are:

1.    an appointment of at least 1 year in length;

2.    a minimum 50% appointment;

3.    meeting the minimum salary requirements for that position;

4.    hired prior to your Normal Retirement Date ("NRD") (i.e. the June 30th or December 31st coincident with or following the date you turn age 65).

There are two exceptions to this: 

  • Sessional Lecturers - whose appointment must be at least four months in length. The other criteria above do not change. Please note that Sessional Lecturers not meeting the eligibility requirements for pension and benefits are eligible for a modified benefit package.

  • Clinical Faculty - do not need to meet the 50% appointment requirement. The other criteria above do not change.

Note that those faculty receiving fellowship earnings are not eligible for pension and benefits.

Enrollment to benefits, where applicable, is included within the online enrollment session. The following list details which enrollment package a new faculty member will be assigned.

Full-time for one year or more and date of hire pre-NRD. Includes: Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor; Instructor I and II; Senior Instructor; Librarian; Continuing Studies Program Director.

Full- and Part-time term appointments for one year or more, have at least 50% appointment, meet salary requirements and are employees (as opposed to trainees). Includes: Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow, Clinical Fellow (without salary requirement).  Trainees with fellowship earnings are not eligible for pension and benefits.

Full- and Part-time term appointments less than 50% appointment of any duration, or greater than 50% appointment but less than one year (Faculty Association members) Includes: Lecturers, Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Instructor, Librarian, Continuing Studies Program Director

The enrollment package also includes payroll forms:  employee data form, direct deposit form, confirmation form to deduct Faculty Association membership dues, and federal and provincial tax forms.

Faculty members who receive this package of benefits receive Statutory Benefits only, i.e., Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan and Worker's Compensation and all statutory leaves.

FACULTY ENROLLMENT PACKAGE 007

Includes: Clinical Fellow (with 10% extra salary in lieu of benefits), Clinical Faculty (with less than one year appointment), Research Associate I and II (less than 50% appointment of any duration, or greater than 50% appointment if less than one year), Postdoctoral Research and Teaching Fellows (less than 50% appointment of any duration, or greater than 50% appointment if less than one year OR receiving a fellowship), Visiting Professor, Visiting Assistant Professor, Visiting Associate Professor, Visiting Lecturer, Visiting Scientist/Scholar, Adjunct Professor with salary.

The enrollment package also includes payroll forms:  employee data form, direct deposit form, and federal and provincial tax forms.

Faculty members who receive this package of benefits and are receiving salary (as opposed to a fellowship) receive Statutory Benefits only, i.e., Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan and Worker's Compensation and all statutory leaves. Faculty members who receive this package of benefits and are receiving a fellowship (as opposed to salary) receive Worker's Compensation but not other Statutory Benefits, i.e., Employment Insurance and Canada Pension Plan BUT are eligible for all statutory leaves.
