Who is eligible to receive UBC EFAP coverage?

UBC EFAP coverage is mandatory for all UBC staff and faculty and their families who are part of the UBC Benefits plan. If you already receive similar coverage elsewhere (e.g. through your spouse’s benefit plan) or to add or remove dependents from your current coverage, visit the Forms section of the UBC Benefits website to complete an Opt-out Form or Change Form. EFAP is also available to UBC retirees and survivors at their own cost, if elected at the time of enrolment in the Retirement and Survivor Benefits Plan (RSB).

Coverage Details

When coverage begins: the first of the month on or after you are hired.

When coverage ends: your coverage ends on the earliest of the following dates:

  1. three months following the month your employment with UBC ends; or
  2. the Dec. 31 following the date you turn 71 if you are still working, plus an additional three months (to March 31).

Who qualifies as your dependent:

In addition to you, the following eligible dependents may be covered:

a) Your legal spouse, common-law spouse or partner of the same sex. At any one time, only one person may be claimed as your spouse or partner.

b) Unmarried dependent children age 18 and under or age 19 to 24 and in full-time attendance at an educational institution recognized by Canada Revenue Agency.

c) Disabled children of any age who are financially dependent on the staff or faculty member.

d) Dependent parents who are financially dependent on and are living with the staff or faculty member.

Confidentiality

The information you share with UBC’s EFAP provider is confidential, and will not be shared with UBC. The University is not told the identity of those using EFAP services, including on-line services. For more information on our EFAP provider’s privacy policy click here.
