On December 3, 2017, the federal government introduced new Employment Insurance (EI) benefits called the EI family caregiver benefit to help families care for a critically ill/injured family member or person that considers you a family member.
The new EI family caregiver benefits provide:
- Up to 15 weeks at 55% of salary (max. of $547/week) to care for adults 18 years of age or older
- Up to 35 weeks at 55% of salary (max. of $547/week) to care for children under 18 years of age
The new family caregiver benefits are offered in addition to EI compassionate care benefits for caregivers who are caring for terminally ill/injured family members or person that considers you a family member.
The BC Employment Standards Act currently provides eight weeks of job-protected leave for compassionate care, but does not include family caregiver leave. If you plan to apply for EI family caregiver benefits, you will need to apply for a general unpaid leave, and you will be responsible for paying the full cost of the benefits and pension you choose to maintain.
