We are delighted to share Patricia’s benefits story. Patricia works in the Department of English and will be retiring from UBC this summer after more than 42 years of service!
Over the years, what benefit would you say has helped you and your family the most?
It would have to be UBC’s travel benefits. To give you an example, my spouse fell ill two weeks prior to our Mediterranean cruise holiday. It was touch and go, but the day before our departure his doctor cleared travel.
We informed Sun Life of his doctor’s decision and based on this, they confirmed that he would be covered for emergency medical expenses while travelling outside Canada.
As an added precaution, we obtained a letter from the doctor clearing travel. This was a tip we received during UBC’s lunch-and learn-session on Understanding Your Travel Benefits.
Knowing that my spouse would be covered gave us tremendous piece of mind to continue with our travel plans. I am pleased to report that my spouse had no health issues on the trip. We had a marvelous time and a big part of that had to do with knowing we had coverage in place in case we needed it (and thankfully we didn’t!).
Anything else you would like to share?
UBC’s travel benefits coverage has given my spouse and I the freedom to travel, and my benefits as a whole has allowed us to feel more secure when health issues have become threatening and stressful. We are very grateful to have the coverage.
Did you know?
In Patricia’s spouse’s example, a pre-existing condition had stabilized and therefore any medical expenses incurred as a result of the condition would be considered unexpected and a medical emergency.
