Opening & Downloading Documents

An important part of the recruiting system is being able to access the Resume/CV of your applicants. The system restricts the types of documents to .doc, .docx, and .pdf file extensions. Normally, by clicking the Resume icon or the name of the uploaded document, the document will open in the appropriate program (Word, Adobe Reader).

However, sometimes this doesn’t work. Known causes and solutions are listed below. Although the situations described below might not be exactly the same as yours (different browser, different version, etc.) the solutions below will give you some ideas of what to look into. We recommend that you obtain the assistance of your network/PC administrator before trying any of these solutions. If you continue to have problems, have your network/PC administrator contact Kathy Hansen at 604.822.8458.

Pop-up Blocker

  • Most browsers inform you that a pop-up has been blocked. For example, in Internet Explorer a banner appears between the command bar and your page. If you click the banner, various options are presented.
  • Most browsers give you an option to temporarily or permanently allow pop-ups from a specific site. Given this option, permanently allow pop-ups from the Recruiting system. This is safer than globally disabling pop-ups.
  • For older browsers, you may need to adjust the pop-up settings manually via the Tools menu.
  • If you are unsure how to do this, contact your network/PC administrator for assistance.

.docx Format (Word 2007) When Using an Earlier Version of Word

  • For many earlier versions of Word, you can convert the file format with special software from Microsoft.
  • You only have to install the converter once and it works automatically. It will work for other situations, such as if someone emails you .docx (Word 2007) and .xlsx (Excel 2007) files.
  • Install the Compatibility Pack for Office 2007.

Word is not Installed on Your Computer

  • Microsoft Word is not installed on your computer. This could be because you don’t have a word processing tool installed, or you have one but it’s not Microsoft Word.
  • Most word processing tools can open documents created in other packages. Check your Help utility to see if this is an option.
